Radiohead play their first Dutch show at Bevrijdingspop in Haarlem
Radiohead played their first show in the Netherlands today, at Bevrijdingspop in the Haarlemmerhout, a park in Haarlem, and the set went out on the radio. Five days before “Pop Is Dead” is in the shops, they played it and its B-side “Banana Co.”, along with “The Bends”, a new song that is on no record yet.
The trip was squeezed into the British tour, between King Tut's in Glasgow on Monday and Leicester University tomorrow. Thom Yorke had been in Amsterdam days earlier on his first visit to the city, giving interviews to the Dutch press, and told Het Parool how Radiohead came to sign to EMI.
Bevrijdingspop is one of 12 free festivals held across the country on 5 May, Liberation Day, each built around one right in the Dutch constitution; this year's is the right to vote. De Volkskrant picked Haarlem's as the best known of them. Radiohead shared the bill with Janis Ian, The Brandos, 2 Unlimited, Kuni Kids, the Bhundu Boys, and Robert Gordon with Chris Spedding. The music ran for 12 hours from midday, and the organisers counted 85,000 people over the day, Het Parool reported.
