Radiohead open their first American tour at Venus de Milo in Boston

written up for the archive

Radiohead played the first night of their first American tour at Venus de Milo in Boston on 22 June, to a club so full that Bob Butman, reviewing it for Lollipop Magazine, spent most of the night nearly crushed. He had known “Creep” as a song on WFNX, Boston's alternative station.

Thom Yorke sang so hard that he was drenched in sweat after the first song, and he held the room for the rest of the set. Butman was struck by how ordinary the band looked, five normal-looking young men who played aggressively and stayed cool doing it.

After the show the band introduced themselves, politely, and Phil Selway told Butman that Boston was the first stop of the tour and that he had been surprised by how excited the crowd was.

The review ran in Lollipop's September 1993 issue and gives no date; the night is the one the site lists for Venus de Milo.
