Radiohead finish their first club tour of mainland Europe in Paris

written up for the archive

Radiohead end their first club tour of mainland Europe tonight at the Passage du Nord-Ouest in Paris, after most of June in Denmark, Sweden, the Netherlands and France. Before it, their only dates in any of the four were a festival slot in Haarlem in May and a radio session in Paris in February.

The encore at the Barbue in Copenhagen on 3 June brought the first known performance of “Permanent Daylight”, still an instrumental, and the night ended with Glen Campbell's “Rhinestone Cowboy”. The instrumental came back in Gothenburg the next night, and the day after that, by the tape's notes, they shared a festival bill in Fagersta with Ride, the bigger band.

The Netherlands got a full week, with “Creep” climbing the Dutch Top 40 to number 17. Thom Yorke talked to the Algemeen Dagblad in the paper of 8 June, the day it began in Nijmegen, and on Saturday 12 June they played twice, about 45 minutes in the afternoon at the free Beeckestijn festival in Velsen and the Melkweg in Amsterdam that night.

Gijsbert Kamer, reviewing Utrecht for de Volkskrant, heard Echo & the Bunnymen and the Teardrop Explodes in them, and their slightly arrogant stage manner in Yorke. He found more good songs than “Creep”, if not many more, liked “Anyone Can Play Guitar” best, and called it a fine start. At Metropolis in Town in Rotterdam, a one-day festival over three rooms of Nighttown, the Algemeen Dagblad's David Kleijwegt found most of the bill mediocre and Radiohead, the draw because of “Creep”, sharp and sure of themselves.

In France, Yorke and Jonny Greenwood played an in-store set at the FNAC in Nancy on 15 June before the full band's show there that night. Tonight's long set takes in most of Pablo Honey, several B-sides, “Permanent Daylight” and “Rhinestone Cowboy” in the encore again. At the end of the month they start their first North American tour, in Boston.

Lund or Fagersta?

The site's concert list has 5 June at Mejeriet in Lund. The surviving tape of that day comes from the Bergslagsrocken festival in Fagersta, some 600 km away, and the dates here follow the tape.

archivist’s note

The Dutch reviews are summarised from the original Dutch. The Scandinavian and Paris nights are dated by surviving tapes and their notes, not by period press.
