Radiohead play the Wulfrun Hall after Thom Yorke's ankle X-ray
Thom Yorke spent Thursday afternoon at Wolverhampton General having his ankle X-rayed, and that night Radiohead played the Wulfrun Hall.
He sprained the ankle at the end of the Manchester University show on Wednesday and was driven over in a hire car. While he was at the hospital, Jonny Greenwood waited at the hall to soundcheck. Yorke said nothing before the show, to rest his voice. Outside, a tout offered Ed O'Brien and Phil Selway tickets. They told him they were on the guest list.
The venue had billed the night as one of only three UK dates this spring, and promised completely new material from a second album the band began in March with John Leckie, who produced the Stone Roses. The Julie Dolphin supported.
In the hotel foyer in the small hours, Yorke told Holly Barringer of Melody Maker, who is travelling with the band, that his voice was shredded from early-morning festival sets the weekend before, and that he had no idea whether the next night's show in London would work. Barringer rates Wolverhampton one of the best gigs she has seen.
