Radiohead's van and gear stolen in Denver as the Soul Asylum tour begins

written up for the archive

Radiohead's van, a yellow 10-foot Penske, was stolen with most of their equipment from the car park of a Days Inn in Denver on the morning of Wednesday 4 October, the day of the first show of their American tour with Soul Asylum. It came two days after their sold-out surprise show in New York), their first night since the R.E.M. dates ended in Hartford.

Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood went on that night anyway, just the two of them, with an acoustic set on rented equipment. The show page has “Killer Cars” and “Creep” from it.

The next night, at Salt Air in Salt Lake City, was cancelled so the band could buy new gear. Capitol, in a release dated today, lists nine dates still to come with Soul Asylum and says Radiohead hope to be back on schedule as soon as they can.

Taken with the van were a champagne-sparkle Drum Workshop kit, four Telecasters (yellow, black, green and sunburst), three acoustic guitars and ten effects pedals.

The police have found the van, but there is no lead on what was in it. The band and Capitol are offering a cash reward.

All of the equipment is very personal and has taken the band a long time to build up. If anyone has any information, please call the Denver Police Department, no questions asked.
