Let Down

a ballroom at 3am

They recorded it with Nigel Godrich in the ballroom of St Catherine's Court, Jane Seymour's house, at three in the morning, chasing a Phil Spector wall of sound. The shimmer is a trick borrowed from Steve Reich. Jonny Greenwood plays his arpeggiated guitar in a different time signature from everyone else, so the parts drift in and out of phase, and he added another arpeggio generated on a ZX Spectrum.

Thom Yorke recorded vocals for two extra verses, and neither felt right for the song. Rather than choose, the band laid both over each other in the last verse, which is why “you know where you are with” and “one day I am gonna grow wings” arrive at the same time. He and Jonny thought the song too long and wanted to fade it out in the instrumental section, and Godrich and the rest of the band would not have it.

He told Q in 1999 that the let-down of the title was sentimentality itself, people emoting at him until every emotion sat on the same plane, whether it came from a car advert or a pop song.

Ed O'Brien calls it the emotional heart of OK Computer, and he is the reason it is on the record at all.

the single that wasn't

It was considered for the lead single, until nobody liked the video, and “Paranoid Android” went out instead. In America it went to radio that September as a promotional single, and Capitol cut 32 seconds out of it to get it there, the quiet interlude in the middle. “We whacked it,” Phil Costello, the label's senior vice president for radio promotion, told Rolling Stone. Fifty-five stations added it in its first two weeks, and it got as far as 29 on the Modern Rock chart.

It closed the first season of The Bear in 2022 without troubling a chart. Late in 2024 people on TikTok began pairing it with melancholy clips, and by the start of June 2025 it was drawing about four million American streams a week. It reached Hot Alternative Songs, a chart where only “Creep” had put Radiohead before, and on the chart dated 30 August it entered the Hot 100 at 91, their fourth entry there and the first since “Nude”. In Britain it climbed to number 73 that September. It is hard to think of an argument Yorke was luckier to lose.

He called the whole thing bizarre. O'Brien was astonished, until his children, 18 and 21, put him straight. “What do you expect?” they said. “Teenagers are depressed. It's depressing music!”

It was first played at the Troubadour in Los Angeles on 14 March 1996, more than a year before the record. The layering that makes the record is what makes it hard on stage, the stacked vocals above all, and Yorke tends to skip the last verse and sing the backing part instead. It was dropped after 1998, came back in Copenhagen in May 2006 on the first night of the band's first tour since 2004, and then vanished again for ten years, until New York on 26 July 2016.

When Radiohead walked out at the Movistar Arena in Madrid on 4 November 2025, their first concert since August 2018 and the start of a European tour in the round, it was the song they began with, a few months after TikTok had put it in the charts. It was in the set on 20 nights that winter.

In February 2026 US Immigration and Customs Enforcement used it in social media posts, which were shared by the White House and the Department of Homeland Security. The band demanded it be taken down.

It ain't funny, this song means a lot to us and other people, and you don't get to appropriate it without a fight. Also, go fuck yourselves.
