Radiohead's “Karma Police” leaves the MTV awards empty-handed
The “Karma Police” video went home with nothing from the MTV Video Music Awards at the Universal Amphitheatre in Los Angeles on Thursday, despite four nominations. It lost Best Group Video to the Backstreet Boys' “Everybody (Backstreet's Back)”.
All four nominations, announced in June, were for the one clip: Best Group Video, Best Alternative Video, Best Direction and Best Cinematography. When the list came out NME counted Radiohead the leading British contenders. The Verve's “Bitter Sweet Symphony”, up against “Karma Police” for Best Group Video and Best Alternative Video, lost both too.
The Best Direction nomination was Jonathan Glazer's, for the film he made of the song. Madonna went home with six awards, five of them for “Ray Of Light”, including Video of the Year. Jonas Akerlund's film for it beat Glazer's to Best Direction.
