Thom Yorke sings three Roxy Music songs in Velvet Goldmine

written up for the archive

Thom Yorke sings lead on Roxy Music's “2HB”, “Ladytron” and “Bitter-Sweet” in Velvet Goldmine, Todd Haynes's film about 1970s glam rock, which opened in British cinemas on 23 October 1998. He and Jonny Greenwood are in The Venus in Furs, a band made up for the film with Bernard Butler of Suede, Andy Mackay of Roxy Music and Craig McClune.

The Venus in Furs recorded five covers. Jonathan Rhys Meyers sings the other two, Cockney Rebel's “Tumbling Down” and Brian Eno's “Baby's on Fire”.

Yorke told MTV that he was asked to ham it up. It was cool, but it doesn't sound like me singing at all.1 He does rate one of them. The version of Bitter-Sweet is really cool.1
