Thom Yorke stops “Airbag” as fans are crushed in Vancouver

written up for the archive

Radiohead stopped “Airbag”, the first song of their set at the Pacific Coliseum in Vancouver on 6 April, because fans at the front were being crushed. Thom Yorke signalled Ed O'Brien to stop and spoke to the crowd. There are a lot of people getting squashed, so if you want us to fucking go off we will. Please don't. We really, really want to play to you.2

The band were off for about 15 minutes while security cleared the front of the stage, and then began the set again.

DJ Gio reviewed the night for Off Beat, the free monthly of CFUV, the University of Victoria's campus radio station. He puts the crowd at a little over 10,000, and the main set at about an hour, drawn from all three albums with OK Computer taking the most. He found the band subdued and cerebral on stage and unhappy to be touring. The encore lasted about 20 minutes, and they seemed reluctant to come back for it. To him the stoppage deflated the room, and the band's complaints about the pushing were whining.
