Radiohead back the Samaritans' new email service

written up for the archive

Radiohead are backing a new Samaritans service that lets people email the charity anonymously, and have given it a live track and a video for its website. The email route is meant for teenagers, young men in particular, who find it hard to talk through their feelings on the phone.

Phil Selway has volunteered with the Samaritans for years, and in February he opened the charity's new Oxford branch. On BBC Radio 1 he said anyone might need the Samaritans at some point in their life, and pointed to the World Health Organisation's forecast that by 2020 depression would be the biggest killer. Set against figures like that, he said, a charity that helps people bring their feelings into the open and find emotional support has a very important role in community and our society.1
