Thom Yorke built the Hail to the Thief sleeve from words heard on Radio 4

written up for the archive

The sleeve of Hail to the Thief is laid out as a road map, and its words come from the radio. Thom Yorke tells NME.COM that after 11 September, and through the war in Afghanistan that followed, phrases on the air kept catching him while he had Radio 4 on. Whenever I heard words that rang bells in my head, I’d write them down, until I had this really long list, which is basically much of the artwork.1

The band designed and made the packaging themselves, after modelling Amnesiac's on an old library book, and some early copies are real fold-out maps. Every song has a second title. The album's is The Gloaming, and the song called “The Gloaming” gets another again, “Softly Open our Mouths In The Cold”.

“There There”, out as a single on 26 May ahead of the album on 9 June, took a long time to finish. Yorke had once feared it would be the song they lost, which upset him, because the tune stayed in his head for about four months and, unusually for him, he never tired of it. He told the BBC that he went to Los Angeles, Nigel Godrich played him the mix, and he cried for ages. I blubbed my eyes out.1 He thought it the best thing the band had ever done.
