Radiohead announce a North American tour of amphitheatres

written up for the archive

Radiohead have announced a North American tour for late summer and autumn, in two legs and mostly at outdoor amphitheatres, the big open-air “sheds” of the American circuit. We just poked around and tried to remember which of the sheds we've liked1, Jonny Greenwood told Billboard of how the venues were chosen.

The first leg opens on 13 August at the Tweeter Center in Mansfield, outside Boston, and runs through Montreal, Toronto, the East and the Midwest to Red Rocks near Denver, then on to Vancouver and the White River Amphitheatre near Seattle on 31 August. Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks open those shows. Malkmus, formerly of Pavement and now touring Pig Lib, had already put the news on his own website at the start of the month. I haven't done any big gigs like that in the U.S. since Lollapalooza. Hope I've learned something.4

The second leg, with Supergrass in support, starts at Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View, outside San Francisco, on 23 September, takes in two nights at the Hollywood Bowl and ends in Atlanta on 6 October.

Tickets for 11 of the 12 August shows go on sale on 21 June, and White River follows a week later. W.A.S.T.E., the band's mail-order and fan club, had posted the August dates to its members two days before the full announcement, and again has tickets of its own to sell. Its store opened on 21 June with a limit of four tickets per person or address for each venue. By the next day only Red Rocks had sold out there.

Plans to repeat the band's 2001 concert in Chicago's Grant Park fell through, the Chicago Tribune reports, and the nearest the tour comes to the city is Alpine Valley in East Troy, Wisconsin.
