Lily Allen calls Radiohead arrogant over the In Rainbows download

written up for the archive

Lily Allen has called Radiohead arrogant for letting buyers name their own price for In Rainbows. The band have millions of pounds, she told Rolling Stone last week, and the scheme sends an odd message to younger bands who have not done as well.

You don't choose how to pay for eggs. Why should it be different for music?

In the same piece, Gene Simmons of Kiss likens it to opening a shop and inviting customers in to pay whatever they like. Liam Gallagher, denying reports that Oasis would put out their next album the same way, said it would happen only over my dead body1.

Maynard James Keenan, Tool's singer, told Spinner the download is a one-trick pony. Giving an album away is comfortable, he argues, for a band who have already made a lot of money selling records and will make a lot more on tour.

He expects other musicians to copy the idea. He is not sure the copying is a good thing, since the reason they make music is because they're damaged goods and they're generally not that bright when it comes to making business decisions.2
