Colin Greenwood plays on James Lavino's Woodpecker score
Colin Greenwood plays on the soundtrack to Woodpecker, an independent film written and directed by Alex Karpovsky, with music by the American composer James Lavino. The album's notes call it Colin's first musical project outside Radiohead.
Woodpecker is a mock documentary, shot in Brinkley, Arkansas, about two birdwatchers hunting the ivory-billed woodpecker, a bird thought extinct since the 1940s. It is Karpovsky's second feature, after The Hole Story, which Lavino also scored. The film had its premiere at South by Southwest in March and has no general release date yet. The soundtrack came out as a download in late July.
The music is acoustic-guitar Americana, with mandolin, celesta, piccolo and analogue synthesisers. Lavino made it with Colin and with Lee and Tyler Sargent of Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, on and off between the middle of 2007 and the middle of this year: in London, in Brooklyn, at stops on the Sargents' tour last year, and at Colin's studio in Oxfordshire.
