Radiohead headline the first Daydream festival in Barcelona

Radiohead headlined the first Daydream festival at the Parc del Forum in Barcelona on Thursday 12 June, their only concert in Spain this year and their first in the city since the Teatre Tivoli in June 2000. Thom Yorke dedicated “Faust Arp” to Faust, the German band who had played the festival's auditorium at half past five, saying he thought they would like it, and he and Jonny Greenwood played it as a duet on acoustic guitars.

The band opened with “15 Step” and played for a little over two hours, to a crowd the organisers put at 20,600.

Daydream was run by the people behind Summercase, and Radiohead's place at the top of it was confirmed in January. The band picked the rest of the bill, announced in March: their tour supports Bat for Lashes and Liars, with Clinic, Low and Modeselektor. M83 and Four Tet played too. In the auditorium, 14 players of the Ensemble Nacional de Música Contemporánea de España, conducted by Sergio Alapont, gave Off Computer, arrangements of pieces by Jonny Greenwood, some of them never played in public before. So many people wanted to hear it that it was given twice, at seven in the evening and again at midnight.

The show had the tour's all-LED lighting rig, designed by Andi Watson and in use since the North American dates began in May. Sinnamon, the organisers, told TreeHugger that the band had asked for real cutlery instead of disposables, and for water tanks so that bottles could be refilled. Drinks came in returnable cups with the band's name on them, on a one-euro deposit. Five empty plastic bottles could be swapped for a full one, and the programme went out by Bluetooth instead of on paper. Friends of the Earth volunteers were there at the band's suggestion, handing out information on the climate and collecting signatures for a petition to Spanish politicians.
