Fans upload 2,254 remixes of Radiohead's “Nude”

written up for the archive

Uploads have closed at radioheadremix.com, where Radiohead asked fans to remix “Nude”, and 2,254 mixes are now up to be heard and voted on until 1 June. When the band posted the site's figures on Dead Air Space, their blog on radiohead.com, on 4 May, more than two and a half million people had visited, and the post signed off with nothing but three question marks.

There is no prize, only the vote. The day after launch, the Toronto band Holy Fuck were ahead by several hundred votes, and their mix held the top spot for a while; it is now several thousand votes behind “Nude (SPOR remix)”. Mark Richardson, working through the entries for Pitchfork, finds that most keep Thom Yorke's vocal at the centre, and he came across at least two with titles along the lines of “The Better Than Holy Fuck Remix”.

The band launched the scheme on 1 April, the week “Nude” came out as a single on CD, seven-inch and download. To celebrate this week's single release (we still have those in England) Radiohead have broken up the song 'Nude' into pieces for you to remix.8 The five pieces, or stems, were bass, voice, guitar, strings/FX and drums, sold on iTunes at 99 cents each as DRM-free iTunes Plus files, and anyone who bought all five that first week got a code for a GarageBand project file of the song.

The stem sales counted toward the single, which reached number 21 in Britain and number 37 on the Billboard Hot 100, the band's first American top 40 hit since “Creep”.
