Radiohead play the first of two nights at the Hollywood Bowl

Radiohead played the first of their two nights at the Hollywood Bowl on Sunday, and the setlist.fm record of the night has an a cappella snippet of R.E.M.'s “Electrolite” just before the last song, “Everything in Its Right Place”. The song is Michael Stipe's goodbye to Los Angeles and Hollywood.

With Liars in support, the band played 25 songs, opening with “15 Step”. It was their third visit to the Bowl, after one night in August 2001 and two in September 2003.

Andi Watson, the band's lighting and set designer of long standing, built this tour's stage with them. A rectangle of tubular LED lights, each about the height of a lamp post, stands around the players and cycles through purple, red, green, white and blue, while big video screens behind move in step. In one sequence each player's head moves behind glowing pale blue bars, which Randall Roberts, reviewing the night for LA Weekly, likened to an old Blue Note sleeve. There were no explosions and no pyrotechnics, and Roberts suggests the show is better thought of as a huge light sculpture with music than as a concert. He found “House of Cards” too soft. His peak of the night was the start of “Bodysnatchers”, with Thom Yorke playing the distorted opening riff under flashing raspberry and gold.
