Radiohead's “Jigsaw Falling into Place” enters the UK chart at number 30

written up for the archive

“Jigsaw Falling into Place”, the first single from In Rainbows, entered the UK singles chart at number 30 today, a week after XL Recordings released it on CD, 7-inch and download. Downloads alone had put it at number 137 the week before. On sales of CD and vinyl it is number five, and on the independent singles chart number two. It is Radiohead's first single since “2 + 2 = 5” in 2003, and it arrives two weeks after In Rainbows reached British shops on CD.

The B-sides are Thom Yorke on his own. He played all three at the BBC's Maida Vale Studios in November 2005 for the pilot of From the Basement, Nigel Godrich's music programme with no presenter and no audience, whose first episode went online in December 2006 with Yorke at the piano. The CD backs the studio track with “Down Is the New Up” and “Last Flowers”, both on the bonus disc of the In Rainbows discbox in December; the 7-inch turns over to “Videotape”, the song that closes the album.

John Dingwall of the Daily Record made it his single of the week with five stars and wished it could give Radiohead a number one. Clash liked it but found it, like the album, rather safe, while Mike Diver gave it 8 out of 10 in Drowned in Sound and heard an ideal first step into the album.

Yorke greeted the release on Tuesday on Dead Air Space, the band's blog. a little bird tells me that JiGsaw falling into Place is an actual physical single in the United states of Britain this week. awwwwwwwww... how cute.....7
