Song · In Rainbows era (2007–09)
Down Is the New Up
It was considered for the middle of In Rainbows and sent to the second disc instead.
2005–06
from the basement, then the tour
Yorke played it on From the Basement in 2005 with “Videotape” and “Last Flowers”, and the band worked it up on the 2006 tour, a year before the album.
It is a piano song at slow-funk pace that stays bare until the strings arrive and turn menacing, with Yorke's falsetto in the last section drawing the Prince comparisons that follow him around. At one point it was in contention for the album proper.
Disk 2 contained some of Radiohead's best work, such as ‘Down Is the New Up’, but it did not fit the main album.
