Jonny Greenwood wins an Ivor Novello for There Will Be Blood

written up for the archive

Jonny Greenwood's score for Paul Thomas Anderson's There Will Be Blood won Best Original Film Score at the 54th Ivor Novello Awards at Grosvenor House in London tonight. Faber Music, his publisher, says Greenwood was not there to collect it; his producer, Graeme Stewart, accepted it on his behalf.

In early 2008 the Academy in Hollywood ruled it out of the Best Original Score Oscar because most of the music in the film had not been written for it. Much of the score draws on two of Greenwood's concert pieces, Popcorn Superhet Receiver and Smear. The Broadcast Film Critics had given it their best score award that January, and weeks after the Oscar ruling it won the Silver Bear for Outstanding Artistic Contribution at the Berlin film festival.

At the Ivors it beat David Arnold's music for the Bond film Quantum of Solace and Benjamin Wallfisch's for The Escapist.
