David Bowie's “Heroes” opens it. A 13-song list that leaked at the end of October had “Street Spirit” second and the Kinks' “Waterloo Sunset” in the set. The Kinks are gone from the finished record.
As reported, the writers Gabriel covers are to return the favour on a companion album of his songs, the first of several releases he has in mind. Bob Ezrin produced Scratch My Back at George Martin's AIR Lyndhurst and at Real World, Gabriel's studios in Wiltshire.
John Metcalfe, formerly of the Durutti Column, wrote the scores. They are for orchestral instruments and voice only, with no guitars, drums or world instruments, and they range from sparse chamber music to a full orchestra. The songs are not simply covers. They are major reinterpretations of some famous stuff. It's quite radical.
