Jonny Greenwood writes Water for the Australian Chamber Orchestra

written up for the archive

Jonny Greenwood has written a piece called Water for the Australian Chamber Orchestra, who will play it in Australia in October and November 2014.

The orchestra asked Greenwood to write for it after he played with its players last December, an unbilled turn with ACO Underground in which he played Steve Reich's Electric Counterpoint. After Radiohead's Australian tour he worked on the piece with the players at their Sydney studio, then travelled to India. The space in Indian classical music and the textures were a big influence on the commission1

Water will be played in Tognetti's Beethoven, a programme named for Richard Tognetti, the orchestra's artistic director and lead violinist.

Greenwood has scored two of Paul Thomas Anderson's films, There Will Be Blood and The Master. I'm so used to closely recorded sounds, it's always a jolt to realise that the 'in the room' sound of an orchestra is a different animal from a recording1
