Thom Yorke airs “Honey Pot”, a new song grown from “All I Need”, on KCRW

Thom Yorke and Nigel Godrich took over the 10am hour of Morning Becomes Eclectic on KCRW, the Santa Monica public station, on Friday 7 June, and closed it with “Honey Pot”, a Yorke track nobody had heard. This is a remix of 'All I Need' that turned into a new song that no one's ever heard, and we didn't know what to do with.¹ Earlier in the hour he played another unheard piece of his own, an untitled piano sketch, which he said he didn't even remember writing.

I'm not supposed to say what it is, right?

Yorke asked Godrich as “Honey Pot” began. Well, no, I'm just saying don't talk over it.⁴ They talked over it. The track, as The Music described it, loops samples of Yorke's voice behind his lead vocal, over a beat that repeats all the way through, with a glockenspiel passing across; it sounds very little like the In Rainbows song it came from.

The two were promoting Amok, the album their band Atoms for Peace put out in February. The rest of the hour opened with Charles Mingus's “Mood Indigo” and took in James Holden, Madvillain, FaltyDL, Philip Jeck and the Beastie Boys' “Root Down”. Yorke played air drums to the start of Joe Jackson's “Different for Girls”.

He told the host, Jason Bentley, that part of the pleasure of DJing is having something to dance to. He DJed at college and danced himself silly before he ended up in a guitar band. Watching his own moves in the “Lotus Flower” video, he said, was like suddenly seeing himself naked for the first time.
