Australian Chamber Orchestra take Jonny Greenwood's Water to America
The Australian Chamber Orchestra will give the first performance in the United States of Water, the piece Jonny Greenwood wrote for them, on a tour of nine cities in April. It opens at Bing Concert Hall in Palo Alto on 10 April and ends at Zankel Hall, Carnegie Hall, in New York on 26 April. The piece had its premiere in Dublin last October.
In a press release Greenwood explains the pull of writing for them. This world of classical music is for me, all about the room and the concert and every performance being different and everything being unrepeatable
1 With Radiohead, he says, the work is in arranging and recording the songs as well as they can, so that every hearing is the same.
He knew the orchestra only by reputation, from reading reviews of their London concerts, and many people called them the best chamber orchestra in the world. Their invitation to write something came, he says, by happy chance, just as Radiohead's tour ended in Australia.
