Rachel Owen, Thom Yorke's partner of 23 years, dies at 48

written up for the archive

Rachel Owen died of cancer on Sunday 18 December, aged 48. Pembroke College, Oxford, where she was a Retained Lecturer in Italian, announced her death on its website on Monday. Her health had been failing through her last year, and the college says she asked to go on teaching. She taught to the end of the Michaelmas term that has just finished.

The college remembers her as an artist known internationally for her photography and printmaking, and as a scholar of medieval Italian literature. Her doctorate was on the illustrations in the earliest manuscripts of Dante's Divine Comedy, and one of the last things she made was a series of prints after the cantos of its first book, the Inferno. The Telegraph reports that the series is to be shown at Pembroke's JCR Art Gallery in the spring.

Owen and Thom Yorke met at Exeter University, where both studied art, before he was famous. They were together for 23 years, kept their life to themselves and were rarely seen in public together. Yorke announced in a statement in August 2015 that they had separated. They have two children, Noah, who is 15, and Agnes, who is 12.
