Ed O'Brien releases “Santa Teresa”, his first solo music, as EOB
Ed O'Brien released his first solo music on 4 October, an instrumental called “Santa Teresa”, under the name EOB. It came six days after a ten-second clip, mostly drone, that ended on the words “Coming soon” and was the first public sign of the music.
The title is a hilltop district of Rio de Janeiro. Since a BBC interview in 2016, O'Brien has said his solo album grew out of his family's years in the Brazilian countryside and his time at Carnival. Nothing in the track sounds obviously Brazilian, though. It is ambient and wordless, and Tom Breihan of Stereogum likens it to Brian Eno and Fennesz.
“Santa Teresa” is offered as the first taste of an album still to be announced. In April O'Brien named Flood and Catherine Marks as its producers and said he hoped to have it out this year, and Flood is credited on the track. O'Brien posted it on Twitter as @EOBOfficial around midnight UK time, with a note.
Hello Good People. This is the sound of Santa Teresa… with songs to come soon. Big Love Ed
