Jonny Greenwood plays a Maida Vale session for 6 Music
Jonny Greenwood was Mary Anne Hobbs's guest on BBC Radio 6 Music on Monday 30 September, with a live session from the BBC's Maida Vale studios at about midday. Two of the pieces were his own small works, which he says had never been recorded until now: “Miniatures from Water”, for piano, violin, string drone and tanpura, and “88” for solo piano.
The Bach he played between them comes from the Chaconne of the second Partita for solo violin; the Partita and “Miniatures from Water” came out on 24 September as the first two records on Octatonic Records, the label he announced a fortnight ago.
In the programme's notes he says he is recording only players he has met since his first film score. Since doing my first soundtrack, I've become friends with lots of these remarkable musicians, as well as more familiar with the music they play. It's a whole world out there.
