Thom Yorke puts out a hand-drawn video for “Last I Heard”

written up for the archive

Thom Yorke has put out a video for “Last I Heard (...He Was Circling the Drain)”, a song from ANIMA, his album of June. It runs just over five minutes, more than 3,000 frames drawn by hand in black and white by Art Camp, an experimental studio in Brooklyn, working with Saad Moosajee. Faceless figures wander through an abstract city, and one person moves among them alone.

Art Camp told Paste that Thom set them going. Thom shared a list of visions with us, disconnected images from his dreams.1 More than a dozen people on the video team added visions of their own. What they were after, the studio says, was the feeling of the song and the record, of being completely alone among people in whom one sees oneself and yet cannot understand, people who have lost their minds to the city.

ANIMA Technologies, the made-up company behind the album's campaign, showed the first clips over three days at its Los Angeles offices, on a wall of televisions built for it.

Getting there took clay sculpture, one-cent 3D horses, crowd simulations and charcoal dust, and the studio calls the process stressful but also beautiful. We made the entire video and threw it away, made it again, threw it away, dozens of times.1
