Thom Yorke won't be at Radiohead's Rock Hall induction

Thom Yorke will not be at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn on 29 March, when Radiohead are inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Asked by Chris Willman of Variety whether he would go, he said I can't. I know I can't, because of these piano pieces that I've written.⁶ The pieces are for Katia and Marielle Labeque, and he has to be at the Philharmonie de Paris for their premiere on 7 April, nine days after the ceremony.

He has no wish to offend anyone, he says, but it has been explained to the band and, being English, they don't really get it. We grew up with the Brits, which is like this sort of drunken car crash that you don't want to get involved with.⁶ Whether the other four will be in Brooklyn is still open, as it has been for weeks.

The interview, done in Los Angeles over the holidays and published today, turns to Suspiria too. “Suspirium”, which opens and closes Luca Guadagnino's film, is on the Academy's shortlist of 15 for Best Original Song, and Yorke hopes it makes the nominations, having given the score a year and a half of his life. Yorke was approached long ago to score Fight Club, he says, but did not know how to then.

The half-dozen unreleased songs he has been playing in the Tomorrow's Modern Boxes shows with Nigel Godrich and Tarik Barri should be on a record this year. The album grew out of those shows, and they had hoped to finish it before the 2018 tour. Since turning 50 he has felt a sense of urgency, and no longer likes to stop. I've written a couple of piano pieces for Katia and Marielle Labèque. Which is hilarious, because I can't read music.⁶
