Thom Yorke tells of Sam Smith behind him at a Billie Eilish show

written up for the archive

Thom Yorke took his daughter, her friends and his girlfriend to see Billie Eilish, and Sam Smith ended up standing right behind them. Yorke tells the story to Jonathan Dean in today's Sunday Times, in an interview around ANIMA, and he could place Smith only as the guy who did the Bond film we didn't do?2

He stands behind us, and I'm sitting with my daughter, her friends and my girlfriend, when suddenly everyone goes, 'Saaam!' I'm, like, 'Aaaargh!'

An Instagram post from 23 March shows the two of them together at the show. Smith's “Writing's on the Wall” was the theme picked for Spectre in 2015, and Radiohead put out the song they had written for it; at the Golden Globes the next January, Smith said he had not heard it.

I like Billie Eilish. She's doing her own thing. Nobody's telling her what to do.

Dean asked whether he finds new music through the streaming services' recommendations. No. If you like this, you'll like this, and then it gives me… Muse.3

In a shorter piece in the same paper, Yorke, 50, tells Grant Tucker that he struggles if he cannot make music, and that he can spend days with recordings of his own voice, moving it between male and female.

The Sunday Times interview is behind a paywall; Yorke's words come from the outlets that quoted it, which agree on them.
