Phil Selway drums on Keaton Henson's Monument
Phil Selway plays drums and percussion on Monument, Keaton Henson's first album since Kindly Now in 2016. Henson announced it on Wednesday 12 August, for release on 23 October on Play It Again Sam.
The album is about Henson's father, the actor Nicky Henson, and his long illness; he died last December, two days before the record was finished. Henson made it at home, mostly on his own, and brought in other players only once the songs were down: Selway, Leo Abrahams on guitar and Charlotte Harding on saxophone. Selway told NME in February that 2020 would be a year away from Radiohead, spent writing his third solo album.
The announcement came with “Prayer”, a song about preparing to lose someone, whose orchestral passage lays recordings of his father's voice over strings.
I didn't know what to say to my dad before he left and I don't really know what to say now, so it is, for once in the record, just simply goodbye.
