The last Peaky Blinders premieres new music from The Smile and Thom Yorke

written up for the archive

The final episode of Peaky Blinders, “Lock and Key”, went out on BBC One on Sunday 3 April with two new pieces by Thom Yorke in it: The Smile's “Pana-vision” and “That's How Horses Are”, an instrumental of his own. Both were out on XL the same night.

The series director, Anthony Byrne, had told NME in February that Yorke and Jonny Greenwood were writing original music for the last series. The music has always been really important historically, and I was really keen to bring a dramatic score into it.1

The Quietus reported that Yorke and Greenwood wrote “Pana-vision” together for the show. It is built on a repeating piano figure, with a refrain that keeps coming back. The song follows “You Will Never Work in Television Again”, “The Smoke” and “Skrting on the Surface” as the band head for their European tour in May. The single comes with an animation by Sabrina Nichols of Stanley Donwood's artwork.

“That's How Horses Are” is Yorke's second piece for the final series, after “5.17” in March, and it goes out as the second track of that single. It is a piano piece that strings join partway through, and more than one listener has heard Erik Satie in it.
