Paul Thomas Anderson films The Smile playing to schoolchildren

Paul Thomas Anderson's video for The Smile's “Friend of a Friend” went online late on Thursday 25 January, the night before Wall of Eyes is out on XL Recordings. Cinema audiences had already seen it on 35mm at the album's playback screenings the week before.

It was shot in a small school hall, with the band waiting for a room of young primary-school children to come in before they start. Thom Yorke plays bass, Tom Skinner drums and Jonny Greenwood piano, over the studio recording. Skinner's son is among the children, whose attention runs from rapt to yawning, fidgeting and picking noses. When the song ends, the children clap and the trio walk out, and one small boy stands up and boos them as loudly as he can.
