a day in the life

Radiohead recorded it on 8 September 2005 for War Child's Help: A Day in the Life, in a gap between two autumn sessions for their next album. Ten years earlier the first Help album had been recorded on a Monday and was in the shops by the Saturday, and the band had made “Lucky” for it in a day; this time War Child meant to beat its own record. About 20 acts recorded on the same day and sent their songs to one studio in London, the downloads went on sale the next day at 99p, and the CD followed on 26 September.

It is a piano ballad, sung plainly at first and then buried under distortion. “Lucky” went on to OK Computer; this one stayed on the charity album, which went to number one in Britain, and reached the streaming services only on 20 January 2020, the day the band opened the Radiohead Public Library.

the british dates

They took it on tour the next spring. It opened the second encore in Blackpool on 13 May 2006, its first time on stage, and at the Hammersmith Apollo on 18 May they played it although it was not on the printed setlist. It was played four times in all, the last of them Chicago on 20 June 2006.

Those British dates, Thom Yorke told the Observer, were partly for road-testing new songs and partly for winning back the confidence the band had lost in the Hail to the Thief years. Eleven new songs were played on them, and this one, already out on the charity album, besides.
