Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood play “Bullet Proof” backstage at Roskilde

written up for the archive

Radiohead played the Roskilde Festival in Denmark today, and backstage Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood played “Bullet Proof..I Wish I Was” on acoustic guitars for Norwegian radio. It is one of the songs for the second album, which the band are still making, and the only earlier performance on record is an acoustic set at On The Edge in New York in June last year.

The two played three songs between the parts of the interview. “Black Star”, another song for the new album, came first, though the whole band have had it in the set since May.

Out on the festival site, six days after the NME Stage at Glastonbury, Radiohead are in the small print of a poster topped by Aerosmith and Peter Gabriel, and the running order put them on the Green stage at half past four. Their set ran to 13 songs, and five of them are on no record yet: “Bones”, “My Iron Lung”, “The Bends”, “Just” and “Maquiladora”. “My Iron Lung” is the next single, due in September.

archivist’s note

The night is known from two radio recordings rather than a review. The main set comes from a tape made for Icelandic radio, which may never have gone out; the backstage songs come from a Norwegian FM broadcast.
