Radiohead play Poland for the first time, on the Sopot pier
Radiohead headlined the Sopot Rock Festival on the town's pier on Tuesday 23 August, their first concert in Poland. Thom Yorke had brought Günter Grass's The Tin Drum to read, and in Sopot, near Gdańsk, he was told that parts of it were set in his hotel, a converted asylum with very thick doors on the rooms.
The ticket puts Radiohead (England) at the top of the bill, above Mafia, Golden Life, Varius Manx and De Mono. Professionally shot footage of “You” and “Bones” from the set survives.
Few in the crowd knew Radiohead, and most, by one local account, had come for the Polish bands. Pablo Honey has sold 152 copies in Poland, on Pometta, once the Boy Scouts' record label. Still, television cameras met the band at the airport, the first time, the band said, that had happened to them.
