“Just” goes in at number 19 as Radiohead line up a November tour

“Just”, from The Bends, came out on Parlophone on Monday 21 August on two CDs and cassette, and it enters the UK singles chart this week at number 19. NME announced the single on 12 August along with seven UK dates at the turn of November, from the Barrowlands in Glasgow on 31 October to Southampton Guildhall a week later.

The same NME page had Colin Greenwood answering the Daily Star, which had reported that Jonny Greenwood played his guitar with a vibrator at R.E.M.'s show at Milton Keynes Bowl on 30 July.

I can dispel that rumour. It's not a vibrator, it's actually a finger massager.

The paper reports that the band have written ten new songs, and that more new tracks will come out as B-sides before the end of the year. One is “Lucky”, which the paper says was previewed at the band's R.E.M. support slot in Berlin on 1 August. Thom Yorke and Jonny played it acoustically for Atlanta's 99X on 21 July. NME tips “(Nice Dream)” as a likely next A-side and “Street Spirit (Fade Out)” for Christmas.

The band were in Europe with R.E.M. at the time, just back from the USA and Japan. A month of American dates with R.E.M. starts in Miami on 8 September, and Colin says audiences there were surprised by The Bends, having thought the band had only “Creep”.

The two bands met at a party in Berlin after the show at the stadium built for the 1936 Olympics, and Colin says it is great to hear R.E.M. call themselves fans.

In Japan, 13 fans worried that Phil Selway was missing out on attention have set up a club called Phil Is Great. At its party they ate his favourite meal, and the two winners of the party games got to hug him.
