Radiohead open for R.E.M. in St. Petersburg and St. Louis
Radiohead opened for R.E.M. at the ThunderDome in St. Petersburg, Florida, on 9 September, and Logan Neill, the St. Petersburg Times critic, rated them one of the most energetic support acts in recent memory. Neill wrote that the night's memorable moments came from Thom Yorke and a “Creep” he called beer-soaked.
It was the band's second visit to Tampa Bay, two years after they played Jannus Landing in St. Petersburg on the Pablo Honey tour. In Neill's review the set leans mostly on The Bends, with the band playing hard behind Yorke.
A few days earlier Neill had interviewed Phil Selway for a preview that presented Radiohead as a band with one big hit. It also quoted Yorke on the band being the opposite of the rock'n'roll lifestyle.
We're not purposefully contradictory. It just happens that we like to use our brains.

Two weeks later R.E.M. played two nights at the Riverport Amphitheatre in Maryland Heights, outside St. Louis, on 22 and 23 September, with Radiohead opening both. On the second night their set took in “Lucky” and “Planet Telex”.
