NME reviews Radiohead's secret hometown show at the Zodiac
Radiohead played an unannounced show at the Zodiac in Oxford on Tuesday 2 July, and Thom Yorke spent part of it taking requests from the crowd, scoffing at anyone who asked for “Creep”. The band did not play it. They did play “Paranoid Android”, the earliest known performance of the song.
Mark Beaumont reviews the night in this week's NME. He picks out three new songs, “I Promise”, “Subterranean Homesick Alien”, which he finds country-ish, and “Lift”, and rates them all highly. “Lift” he calls a summer anthem, and the paper puts it in the headline.
About 400 people were in, around half of them on the guest list. The set ran to about two hours, from “Bones” at the start to “Stop Whispering” at the end, which finished in a wash of guitar noise. Jonny Greenwood played with his arm in a brace. The band were back at the Zodiac the following night.
Yorke also apologised from the stage.
If you see me in the centre of Oxford and I'm not very nice to you, I'm sorry.
