Radiohead warm up for Galway with a sold-out night at Dublin's Olympia
Radiohead played a warm-up show at the Olympia Theatre in Dublin on 26 July, two days before their Big Day Out in Galway. The tickets went in 20 minutes, and every seat in the theatre had been taken out, so the crowd was already on its feet when Thom Yorke walked on with the band.
They opened with “My Iron Lung”, building from a Beatles-like riff into crashing chords, and went straight into “Anyone Can Play Guitar”. Kevin Courtney, reviewing for The Irish Times, singled out the three guitars of Yorke, Ed O'Brien and Jonny Greenwood. To him, the night showed songs that could carry the band without a star personality at the front, where on their last visit to Dublin they had been one more British guitar band with a hit.
Many new songs followed, among them “Let Down” and “No Surprises”. The crowd sang every line it knew, nearly drowning Yorke out in “High and Dry”. “Creep” lifted the room again, with Jonny's guitar hammering home its best-known line.
The encore went back to Pablo Honey for “You” and “Blow Out”, and the band came back once more to finish on “Black Star”.
