Jon Pareles reviews Radiohead's sold-out night at the Hammerstein

written up for the archive

Radiohead brought a glockenspiel on stage at the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York on Tuesday night for one song, “No Surprises”, and played the real instrument where they could have faked it on a keyboard. In Jon Pareles's review of the sold-out show for The New York Times, “Climbing Up the Walls” is stripped back to drums and bass, while “Fake Plastic Trees” starts on an acoustic guitar and ends in a loud, psychedelic swell.

Most of the night moved at slow tempos and in minor keys, Pareles writes, with Thom Yorke singing quietly much of the time and rising into falsetto for the high notes, and the crowd answering loudly. He places The Bends and OK Computer in a line that runs back to the Beatles, and lists what the new songs are about: deadening workplaces, self-help and antidepressants.
