Radiohead's OK Computer goes straight in at number one

written up for the archive

OK Computer is the new number one on the Official Albums Chart, in its first week out, and it is Radiohead's first album to get there. It goes in ahead of Jon Bon Jovi's Destination Anywhere, also new this week, and drops Hanson's Middle of Nowhere, last week's number one, to three.

Parlophone released it on Monday 16 June on CD, cassette and double LP. Music Week made Radiohead its artist of the week in the issue before, with a campaign behind the album that ran to cinema and television advertising.

Britain was not first. The album has been out in Japan since 21 May, and Capitol release it in America on 1 July.
