“Egyptian Song” reminds Ed O'Brien of Mark Hollis
Ed O'Brien counts “Egyptian Song” among the highlights of the sessions so far. Nigel Godrich started last week's mixing with it on Monday, after a week sidetracked by “Cuttooth”, and with Thom Yorke on bass it sounded pretty much finished. By Tuesday Godrich had a good mix of “Egyptian Song”, which the band have been working on since at least December. O'Brien had had little to do with the song, so he feels he can hear it fairly objectively. it has the feel of one of the tracks on the last mark hollis album and it is definitely one of the highlights so far.
1 That record, Mark Hollis, the Talk Talk singer's only solo album, came out in January 1998.
“I Will” has been harder going. It is a song from the band's Copenhagen sessions of 1999, and in December they played it live in the studio before going back to the Copenhagen version. Downstairs on Tuesday they picked it up again, with Jonny Greenwood on organ and everyone hunting for rhythm parts. On Wednesday they were arranging those parts on the computer, slowly, while Yorke and Godrich arranged the drums on “Morning Bell”. we spent alot of time last week ‘throwing shit’ (jonny specifically said he was sick of hearing these very words today) at ‘i will’.
