Los Angeles gets Radiohead's last show for a long time

written up for the archive

Radiohead ended their three North American dates for Kid A at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles on Friday night, and Thom Yorke told the crowd it would be the band's last concert for a long time. Variety reports that the follow-up to Kid A is already recorded, is said to be more song-based, and is planned for release next spring, with a full US tour in the spring or summer.

A pair of $36 tickets for the 6,162-seat Greek went on eBay for about $5,200 a little over a week before the show.

The band played eight of the ten songs on Kid A and nothing from Pablo Honey, “Creep” included. A few lines into “Idioteque” Yorke stopped singing and started again while the band played on, which Troy J. Augusto, reviewing the night for Variety, puts down to the song's odd metre. In “Climbing Up the Walls” Jonny Greenwood worked the knobs of a sound module while Yorke screamed the last lines into the pickups of his acoustic guitar.

Fans at the show have told NME that Yorke sang lines aimed at Tony Blair during “Follow Me Around”, asking whether he had lied to them, though the song is not on the setlist for the night.

Richard Cromelin, in the Los Angeles Times, finds the Kid A songs stronger on stage than on the record, held up by the older songs around them, though OK Computer is still the band's defining album to him. Augusto first saw Radiohead in Los Angeles clubs in 1993, at the Whisky and the Troubadour, and rates this as the best he has seen them.
