written up for the archive

Radiohead were named Best Act in the World Today at the Q Awards in London this afternoon, in a vote by readers of Q and users of its website. They beat U2, R.E.M., Manic Street Preachers, Stereophonics and Travis, and according to the Guardian Cher handed them the award at the Park Lane Hotel.

The band have been on the shortlist for it every year since 1998, and this is the first time they have won. Amnesiac was up for Best Album too, and lost to Travis's The Invisible Band. Nigel Godrich, who produced Kid A and Amnesiac, was named Best Producer.
