Radiohead close five Japanese nights with “Cinnamon Girl” in Yokohama

written up for the archive

Radiohead finished five nights in Japan at Yokohama Arena on Thursday by coming back for a third encore, Neil Young's “Cinnamon Girl”, which they had not played since Santa Barbara at the end of June. The same night brought back “Lurgee”, from Pablo Honey, for the first time since Chicago on 1 August, and found room for “Permanent Daylight”, an old B-side of “My Iron Lung”.

The band came to Japan from Europe, where Belfast on 14 September was the final date. In August Jonny Greenwood said he would like the band to play Britain next year, though no dates have followed.

“The National Anthem” opened every night and ran into “Hunting Bears”, the Amnesiac instrumental, on four of the five. On the first night in Osaka and the first in Yokohama, “Everything in Its Right Place” began with a few lines of R.E.M.'s “It's the End of the World as We Know It (And I Feel Fine)”.

The second Osaka night ended with Can's “Thief”, unplayed since Mountain View in June, and “The Tourist”. “In Limbo” came back that night for the first time since late June, and stayed for the Budokan and the first Yokohama show.

Clinic, the Liverpool band, are reported to have played the Nippon Budokan in Tokyo on the same night as Radiohead, 2 October. There Thom Yorke opened the second encore alone on acoustic guitar with “True Love Waits”, before the band came back to close with “Lucky”.
