Radiohead fill Red Rocks and sit down with MTV

written up for the archive

Radiohead played a sold-out Red Rocks Amphitheatre, in Morrison outside Denver, on Wednesday night, and Thom Yorke got so carried away on guitar in “Paranoid Android” that he tripped over a monitor. Before “I Might Be Wrong” he hugged a fan. He laughed his way through part of “Exit Music (for a Film)”, and twice during “You and Whose Army?” he turned from the piano to look back at the crowd.

It was the second night of the North American tour, after the opener outside Houston, and it ran to 22 songs over more than two hours. “Permanent Daylight”, not heard since the autumn of 2000, was back in the main set.

Nick Marino, reviewing the show for MTV News, says the new records' songs became guitar-driven rock on stage, and the whole night uplifting however bleak the words. He gives Phil Selway the credit for turning programmed beats into live drumming. When the others went off at the end of “Everything in Its Right Place”, Jonny Greenwood and Ed O'Brien stayed on, looping guitar and voice, before the first of two encores.

According to tapes from that night, MTV filmed songs from the show and recorded an hour-long special at Red Rocks as well. For it the whole band sat backstage answering questions from the network and from fans, about cyclical time, Ralph Nader and their 1993 single “Pop Is Dead”, among other things.
