Song · The Bends era (1994–96)
Permanent Daylight
In 1993 it was a short instrumental, offered for a soundtrack and turned down.
1993–94
the noise
Radiohead first played it in Copenhagen on 3 June 1993, more than a year before it came out. That summer it was a brief instrumental, and Thom Yorke explained that it had been put forward for a soundtrack and rejected. By the time it was recorded it had grown longer. It is still close to an instrumental, nearly three minutes of abrasive guitar meant at least partly as a nod to Sonic Youth.
It went out on the second CD of “My Iron Lung” on 26 September 1994. The sleeve credits John Leckie as producer and Nigel Godrich as an engineer, and this song to Godrich and Radiohead as its producers, with Jim Warren, the band's live sound engineer, mixing. No earlier Radiohead record carries Godrich's name as producer.
