Thom Yorke sings the Velvet Underground with Beck in Los Angeles

written up for the archive

Thom Yorke joined Beck on stage at the Wiltern Theatre in Los Angeles on Tuesday night to sing “I'm Set Free”, from the Velvet Underground's self-titled third album of 1969. NME reports it as an impromptu duet; Beck's spokesperson could not confirm it, and no one from Radiohead was available to comment.

The Wiltern show, with Beck and Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam on the bill, was one of four benefit concerts across Los Angeles on the eve of the Grammy Awards, all raising money for the Recording Artists' Coalition. Besides fairer record contracts, the coalition wants an end to the 1987 amendment that makes recording artists the one group of workers in California who cannot walk away from a contract after seven years.
