Thom Yorke plays “Follow Me Around” for Mark and Lard on Radio 1

first posted on Treefingers by Miro · rewritten for the archive

Thom Yorke and Ed O'Brien leave the rest of the band at home and drop in on Mark and Lard on BBC Radio 1, on the eve of Radiohead's Manchester show, and Thom plays “Follow Me Around” on acoustic guitar. It's been kicking around since the heady days of OK Computer. I don't know exactly what to do with it.1

The pair talk about their appearances on Jonathan Ross's show and on Letterman, who keeps his studio so cold that their hands went numb, and what they are listening to: Kings of Leon for Ed, British Sea Power for Thom. Thom thinks OutKast's “Hey Ya!” should be number one across the world. Ed likes The Darkness covering “Street Spirit (Fade Out)” and says “Oh dear” about Paul Oakenfold's version.

There is a wine tasting with the hosts, and Mark and Lard add a sketch of their own, “Thom Yorke's Schooldays”. The pair rule out Eurovision, having not realised it meant qualifying rounds and a public vote. We were going to do it but probably no one would vote for us.1
